From 1 August 2026, the MBS adds item 73331, a test of tumour tissue for RET gene variants in medullary thyroid cancer. Item 73331 is the only change in this release.
Item 73331 tests tumour tissue from a patient with histologically confirmed medullary thyroid cancer for variants in the RET proto-oncogene. A specialist or consultant physician, or someone on their behalf, requests the test. The test determines whether the patient is eligible for a treatment listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
